The responsibility of the Lawton Police Department and Project Under 21 is to take investigatory and enforcement action for any criminal offense. The primary mission is the enforcement of City and State Alcoholic Beverage Laws concerning the sale of alcohol to minors.

The Mission will be accomplished through reasonable and prudent law enforcement and quality service to the public based upon high ethical, professional, and legal standards.

The Lawton Police Department will begin compliance checks at local businesses starting February 2006 and running the rest of the year. This is a busy time for Lawton’s young people with proms, graduations, and summer parties. The Lawton Police Department will reduce under age drinking at the source, the retailers, by conducting these compliance checks and thereby reducing alcohol related incidents with minors.

Compliance Checks Reduce Crime and Alcohol- Related Problems

  1. Enforcing laws prohibiting the sale of alcohol to underage persons can help prevent traffic crashes, the major cause of death among youth.
  2. Teen pregnancy, sexually transmitted diseases, and school dropout rates increase with teen drinking rates; reducing underage access to alcohol can lower the frequency of these social problems.
  3. Fights, vandalism, noise complaints, and other nuisance calls are often caused by young people drinking alcohol.
  4. Rape and other crimes of violence involving teens often involve perpetrators and victims who have been drinking; reducing youth access to alcohol helps fight these crimes.
