Together, the Officers and the Public need to have a better understanding of
what is expected and what can be done to improve

The Lawton Police Departments Citizen Police Academy is a 12-week block of instruction. It is designed to give the public an overview of department divisions and rules governing police activities. It is also designed to create a two-way communication between citizens and officers. Police personnel will teach the academy. The academy dates and times will be announced. This is also a pre-requisite to the sentinel program. Sentinels are volunteers for the Lawton Police Department. For more information about the Sentinel Program click here.

Anyone who works or lives in the Lawton Community is urged to apply for admission. The minimum age for enrollment is 18. No one will be rejected due to his or her sex, race, employment, socio-economic status, or disability.

The purpose of the Citizen
Police Academy is to create
better police-community relations. The
public benefits by better understanding of legal issues, personnel issues, and
departmental procedures. The department
benefits by learning specific problems and needs of the community. The Academy's slogan is
"Community
Partnerships through Awareness."

Topics covered during the Academy will include topics such as; police patrol, traffic enforcement, narcotics, crime prevention, tactical team, firearms, use of force, officer safety, sentinel program, bike patrol, dive team, crime scene investigation, police canine, criminal investigation, lake patrol and much more. There will be lectures, tours and hands-on training. Each division of the police department will be presented during the Academy.
